Exploring Modest Fashion: Saeedah Haque’s Journey
Saeedah Haque had a unique experience interning at London Fashion Week. She noted the irony of celebrating creative clothing in a space where she felt out of place due to her own attire. Raised by Bangladeshi immigrant parents, Saeedah pursued traditional degrees in business and geography, following a path familiar to her family. However, after working a 9-to-5 in the humanitarian sector, she realized she was not fulfilled. It wasn’t until she discovered South Asian designers online who infused their cultural backgrounds and political statements into their designs that she found inspiration to dive into the world of fashion.
Diving into the Fashion Industry
Despite feeling displaced in the glamour of London Fashion Week, Saeedah decided to carve her own path by establishing her brand, Saeedah Haque. Focused on confronting the underrepresentation of South Asian and Muslim individuals in fashion, her designs are unapologetically modest. Notably, her “hoodie abaya,” a modern take on traditional Muslim attire, has gained global attention. Leveraging influences from London’s urban streetwear scene and hip-hop culture, Saeedah’s pieces have resonated with audiences worldwide. Her TikTok account boasts over 200K followers and features praises from celebrities like Kehlani and Dizzee Rascal. Additionally, a collaboration with Nike resulted in a limited collection release, which quickly sold out.
Fashion as Empowerment
For Saeedah Haque, fashion extends beyond mere clothing; it becomes a medium for storytelling, cultural expression, and political activism. In a society that scrutinizes women’s choices, Saeedah sees fashion as a tool for reclaiming autonomy. Through her designs, especially the hoodie abaya, she encourages women, particularly Muslim women, to assert their independence in a world that may seek to restrict their freedoms.
Personal Struggles and Inspiration
Growing up in London, Saeedah encountered challenges in melding her personal style with her faith-based modesty requirements. While Islamic modesty is not restrictive, the lack of diverse fashion options made it difficult for her to express herself authentically. Saeedah’s journey symbolizes a fusion of cultural heritage, personal style, and social empowerment, reflecting the evolving landscape of modest fashion in a modern world.
