The estate of Sinead O’Connor has issued a formal request for Donald Trump to stop playing her music at his campaign rallies, citing significant ideological differences and conflicting beliefs. In a statement released on Monday, the estate, along with Chrysalis Records, urged Trump to immediately cease using O’Connor’s music, particularly her iconic track “Nothing Compares 2 U,” at his political events.
Describing O’Connor as someone who lived by a strong moral compass centered on honesty, kindness, fairness, and decency towards others, the statement emphasized that the late singer would have been appalled and offended by the misrepresentation of her work at Trump’s rallies. The estate condemned Trump’s use of O’Connor’s music, referring to him in strong terms that O’Connor herself had used in the past.
Known for her activism on human rights issues and her outspoken criticism of the Roman Catholic Church, O’Connor was a figure who stood firm in her beliefs long before public awareness of widespread sexual abuse allegations emerged. Her unexpected passing in London last year was ruled as being due to natural causes by the coroner’s report.
O’Connor joins a growing roster of artists who have expressed disapproval of Trump’s inclusion of their music at his rallies, such as Tom Petty, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Rihanna, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Neil Young, and Phil Collins. The estate of Sinead O’Connor is determined to uphold her legacy and ensure that her music is not used in ways that go against the values she stood for during her lifetime.
