The Future of Technology: Sci-fi meets Hi-fi

The Influence of Science Fiction in Technology Innovation

Technology visionaries have often found inspiration in the realm of science fiction. Some have gone as far as restructuring their entire companies around concepts introduced in fictional stories they encountered, mirroring the likes of Second Life and Meta, whose founders drew from Neal Stephenson’s envisioning of the metaverse in his renowned 1992 novel, Snow Crash.

IEEE Spectrum has a long-standing tradition of featuring exceptional sci-fi narratives. Back in the day, a collaboration with computer scientist and author Vernor Vinge led to the creation of “Synthetic Serendipity,” a short story adapted from his book Rainbows End specifically for publication in Spectrum. Vinge’s work, influenced by his interactions with leading technologists, delved into futuristic technologies like 3D printing, augmented reality, and advanced search engines with remarkable foresight and clarity.

The brainchild of our News Manager Margo Anderson and Contributing Editor Charles Q. Choi materialized into a science fiction/fact feature in this edition, led by sci-fi aficionado and Special Projects Editor Stephen Cass. Cass, known for his work on Hollyweird Science and various sci-fi anthologies, eagerly embraced the responsibility. A collaboration with futurist Karl Schroeder, author of numerous sci-fi novels, ensued, resulting in a stimulating narrative that interweaved real science concepts with captivating storytelling.

The central theme of the story, revolving around transforming a planet into a computer, while not groundbreaking in science fiction, was given a fresh perspective by Schroeder. The exploration delved into the practical uses of such an idea and the unintended consequences that may arise, all within the constraints of a concise 2,500-word narrative.

In tandem with the sci-fi tale, efforts were made by Choi, Cass, and Schroeder to ensure that the story, though set in a distant future and fantastical in nature, remained rooted in concepts that hold relevance to current scientific discussions and futuristic projections.

Any compelling science fiction narrative is complemented by visually captivating artwork. Deputy Art Director Brandon Palacio selected Andrew Archer for his ability to strike a balance between realism and stylistic flair. Unlike past practices where accompanying artwork barely correlated with the story, Archer collaborated closely to ensure his visuals seamlessly intertwined with the essence of “Hijack.”

By combining elements of speculative fiction with real-world science, this collaborative effort has not only produced an engaging narrative but has also highlighted the potent influence of science fiction on technological innovation.
