New VA Website Provides Financial Support to Combat Veteran Suicide

The Department of Veterans Affairs has introduced a new online platform aimed at assisting veterans in managing financial challenges, ultimately with the objective of reducing instances of veteran suicides.

Created by the National Veterans Financial Resource Center, the newly launched website serves as a valuable resource connecting veterans with financial tools, educational materials, videos, calculators, and worksheets to aid them in achieving their financial objectives.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough emphasized the correlation between financial issues and the heightened risks of suicide and homelessness among veterans. In a recent statement, McDonough highlighted the mission of empowering every veteran to leverage financial resources, increase their earnings, savings, and prevent financial hardships that may lead to suicidal thoughts.

The website aggregates resources from various government entities, including the Department of Labor, Federal Trade Commission, National Park Service, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In addition to the financial resources website launch, the Department of Veterans Affairs recently committed to the 4+1 Initiative, aimed at supporting military spouses in securing and advancing their careers while maintaining employment stability.

Recognizing the skills and dedication of military spouses, VA Chief of Staff Kimberly Jackson emphasized the importance of enabling these professionals to contribute to the nation’s obligation of caring for veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors.

President Joe Biden’s executive order in June focused on bolstering employment opportunities for military families, given the national average of a 21% unemployment rate among this demographic, according to White House reports.

With a focus on enhancing support for veterans facing mental health challenges, the VA has implemented various initiatives including providing no-cost emergency suicide prevention services and introducing the 988+1 veterans crisis line to expedite access to trained responders for veterans in distress.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.
