Florida Company Issues Recall of Cinnamon Linked to FDA Warning for High Lead Levels

El Chilar Rodriguez LLC, based in Apopka, FL, has issued a recall for over 1,500 bags of El Chilar Ground Cinnamon “Canela Molida” in 1.25-ounce bags due to possible lead contamination.

The distributed product comes from La Raza LLC in Forestville, MD, and is sold in brick-and-mortar stores across Maryland. The affected bags can be identified by the lot codes D300 EX1024 and F272 EX1026, visible on the packaging.

The recall stems from a discovery by the Maryland Department of Health, which found elevated lead levels in the product samples. Further investigation suggests that the issue may be linked to tainted raw materials from the supplier.

If you have purchased El Chilar Ground Cinnamon “Canela Molida” with lot codes D300 EX1024 and F272 EX1026, it is advised to discontinue use and return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Those with young children exposed to lead should consult a healthcare provider for guidance. For inquiries, contact El Chilar Rodriguez LLC at 407-880-6007.

The heightened lead levels in the El Chilar brand ground cinnamon were uncovered through a sampling program in Maryland, following similar issues in children’s applesauce in fall 2023. The FDA, in response, has issued warnings regarding the El Chilar cinnamon and other affected brands.

Although not intended for children, these products are often ingredients in meals consumed by them. The FDA’s Closer to Zero initiative aims to minimize childhood lead exposure, thus prompting the voluntary recall of these products to prevent potential harm to children’s health.

Lead poisoning symptoms may include headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, anemia, irritability, muscle discomfort, tremors, and developmental delays if exposure is prolonged or significant. Parents and caregivers should seek medical advice and consider blood tests if exposure is suspected.
