The discovery of elevated lead levels in the Swad brand ground cinnamon stems from concerns about lead in children’s applesauce products back in the fall of 2023. The FDA has issued warnings about Swad cinnamon and other brands, prompting recalls.
Although these products are not marketed towards children, they may be used as ingredients in dishes served to children. The FDA’s Closer to Zero initiative, aimed at reducing childhood lead exposure, recommends voluntarily recalling these products to prevent any potential harm to children.
For those concerned about lead poisoning, healthcare providers can conduct blood tests if exposure to the recalled products is suspected. Short-term lead exposure may cause symptoms such as headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, and anemia.
Longer-term exposure could lead to additional symptoms including irritability, lethargy, muscle aches, constipation, tremors, and weight loss. In severe cases, it may result in developmental delays and brain damage.
