Strong Evidence of the Closer Relationship Between North Korea and Russia
Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, recently took a ride in a luxury car gifted to him by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This event symbolizes the deepening ties between the two countries.
Since their summit in September last year, Pyongyang and Moscow have been strengthening their relationship. Putin offered Kim a ride in his high-end Aurus Senat limousine, which was delivered to North Korea in February.
Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, a prominent government official, confirmed that Kim used the car for the first time on Friday. She stated that this gesture showcased the evolving friendship between North Korea and Russia on a new level.
Russia’s Luxurious Aurus Brand
The Aurus brand, Russia’s first luxury car brand, is highly esteemed and has been used in motorcades for top officials since Putin’s inauguration in 2018. The introduction of the Aurus limousine to Kim Jong Un adds to his collection of foreign-made luxury cars.
North Korea’s Luxury Car Collection
Kim Jong Un, known for his affinity for luxury vehicles, is reported to have a variety of foreign-made cars that are believed to have been illegally imported into North Korea. During his previous visit to Russia, he used a Maybach limousine for transportation.
Additionally, a recent United Nations report shed light on an attempted shipment of luxury vehicles worth over $1 million destined for North Korea, highlighting the country’s continued pursuit of luxury items despite international sanctions.
Increasing Relations amid Global Tensions
North Korea and Russia have drawn closer over the past year, especially as North Korea advances its weapons programs while Moscow faces criticism for its actions in Ukraine. There are concerns that North Korea may be providing military support to Russia in exchange for technological expertise.

Russia and China, North Korea’s long-standing allies, have consistently opposed new UN sanctions in response to North Korea’s missile tests. These actions have sparked criticism from South Korea, which denounced the gift of the Aurus as a violation of UN sanctions.
Kim’s involvement in paratroop drills, aimed at demonstrating North Korea’s military readiness, further emphasizes the country’s focus on defense capabilities.
The distinctly harmonious relationship between North Korea and Russia continues to raise questions and concerns in the international community.
