The Harrowing Experiences of Palestinians Escaping Israeli Raid in Gaza
In the midst of the chaos surrounding Gaza’s main hospital, Palestinians shared harrowing experiences of heavy fighting, mass arrests, and forced marches past lifeless bodies. Israel’s military reported the killing of more than 170 militants and the detainment of around 480 suspects in the intense raid on Shifa Hospital. This operation was deemed a significant blow to Hamas and other armed groups that had purportedly reestablished themselves within the compound.

The conflict shed light on the resilience of Palestinian armed groups in the deeply damaged region of Gaza, where Israeli forces had to re-engage following a previous raid in the initial stages of the war. Kareem Ayman Hathat, a resident living near the hospital, recounted days of hiding in fear inside his building as gunshots and explosions reverberated, causing the structure to tremble.

Israeli troops stormed the building, compelling Hathat and other residents to leave. Men were strip-searched and detained, while the remaining individuals were blindfolded and coerced to march alongside an armored tank amidst deafening explosions. The use of tank shells was a tactic employed to instill terror among the civilians.
Israeli Response and Operations
Major General Yaron Finkelman of Israel’s southern command lauded the operation as daring and intricate, emphasizing the goal of capturing every terrorist present, irrespective of their condition. Israeli airstrikes in the vicinity of the hospital persisted on Sunday, indicating an ongoing military response.
Allegations and Devastation in Gaza
Israel asserted that Hamas had established a complex command center within Shifa Hospital, which led to the exposure of a tunnel and the discovery of weapons. Gaza City, home to Shifa, suffered extensive devastation during the initial phase of Israel’s offensive. The blockade of northern Gaza since November has resulted in severe food shortages, with experts warning of an imminent famine affecting over 210,000 individuals.
Calls for Humanitarian Support
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the dire situation in Gaza, describing it as a convergence of war, famine, conquest, and death. Urgent calls for a humanitarian cease-fire and the release of hostages trapped in Gaza were made to address the escalating crisis. The humanitarian plight in Gaza demands immediate action and international intervention to prevent further escalation of suffering.
