What an incredible day at IRONMAN Western Australia! Daniel Bækkegård and Fenella Langridge both snagged unforgettable victories in course record times—definitely a fitting end to their 2023 seasons. Just last weekend, Bækkegård grabbed a win and Langridge landed a spot on the podium in Challenge Canberra. Talk about a strong comeback!
Bækkegård faced stiff competition from Australians Matt Burton and Nick Thompson in the men’s race. Meanwhile, Langridge dominated the women’s event and outraced Sweden’s Lisa Norden and Dutch athlete Lotte Wilms to take home her first pro IRONMAN win. What an awesome feat!
Both of these amazing athletes secured their spots at next year’s IRONMAN World Championship. The women’s event will take place in Nice on September 22, while the men’s race will be in Kona on October 26. The excitement is already building!
Men’s Race – Bækkegård Takes Over
It was definitely a fast day in Busselton, and Bækkegård was nearly flawless. Australian Matt Burton put up quite the fight, especially with a fantastic bike leg. But Bækkegård simply outperformed his competitors.
At the start, Aussie Sam Appleton was the first out of the water, blazing through the swim in just 47:40. But ultimately, it was Bækkegård and other top-name athletes who took the lead, easily securing their spots in the front pack
By the halfway point, the race was down to five men, with Bækkegård, McKenna, and Appleton taking control, and the rest of the pack unable to keep up. It was an intense race, but with Bækkegård ultimately leaving everyone behind.
Bækkegård was simply in a league of his own on the run, pushing his way to a victory by over six minutes in the end. What an incredible performance!
