One word will do: Celebrate! That’s exactly what Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban did after the team’s incredible 27-24 win over the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game.
He wasn’t just celebrating any victory. He was rejoicing in possibly his greatest coaching achievement in a long and unparalleled career. To really appreciate the spectacle that was the beating of Georgia, we must first rewind back to September 16th, 2023.
At that time, Alabama was 1-1 and had just suffered a humiliating double-digit loss to Texas. Doubt skulked around the team, and the dynasty felt close to crumbling. Fast forward less than three months later and they end Georgia’s 29-game winning streak. This was an amazing feat, especially considering the earlier loss to Texas. Although Alabama fans might disagree.
“You know how tired I am right now? I’m happy as hell we won,” Saban said after the game. “My speech in the locker room was one word: Celebrate. And I had just enough in the tank to do a dance.”
Alabama has had its share of outstanding teams, but this year was special. This was a superhero trying to save the world without its powers. Saban lost quarterback Bryce Young and linebacker Will Anderson Jr., key players who were pivotal to the team’s success.
