Despite being benched during a tough loss, New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields shared his unwavering faith, viewing his current struggles as a powerful platform to spread a message of hope and resilience.
It’s common for athletes to praise Jesus following moments of triumph, but far less so after a humbling loss that sends them from starter to benchwarmer. Yet that’s precisely what New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields did Sunday after a 13–6 defeat to Carolina—a game in which he was benched at halftime after throwing for just 46 yards and failing, once again, to reach the end zone.
The Jets are winless at 0-7 this season, and their struggling offense is a big reason for it, ranking 29th out of 32 teams in average yards per game. Fields has enjoyed plenty of success during his pro and collegiate career, but the first two months of the 2025 season have not gone as he or the Jets planned.
“I’m at peace,” he told reporters after the game.
“There’s nothing that can faze me, and that’s just due to my relationship with the Lord,” he added.
Fields signed with the Jets during the offseason, hoping a new team and new city would give him a fresh start after up-and-down stints in Chicago and Pittsburgh. Jets coach Aaron Glenn has yet to name a starter for Sunday’s game at Cincinnati, with Fields struggling and quarterback Tyrod Taylor listed as day-to-day due to a knee injury. This week, Fields remained faith-focused as he discussed the possible loss of his starting job.
“I’ve always asked God to give me an opportunity and a platform to spread His Word. And sometimes it doesn’t play out the way you always plan it,” Fields told reporters. “I think the position I’m in right now is a great opportunity to spread that message and really kind of get the world to know how I feel about Him and how great He is.
“I’ve been through a lot in my career, especially my NFL career, [my] college career. God’s been with me through the ups and downs, and I’m probably at a low right now.”

The “old me,” Fields said, would not handle the situation the same way he currently does.
“My faith is so rooted in Christ,” he said. “Like I told you guys earlier this week, nothing can break me. And as far as my job goes here, I’m gonna be the same. I’m going to come to work the same. I’m going to lead the same. And again, just try to continue to spread that message of how good God is. No matter what I go through in life. I know I’m strong enough to handle it. I know He’s strong enough to help me handle it.”
