BYU’s Aly Khalifa Takes on March Madness While Fasting for Ramadan

Championing Faith and Discipline Through Ramadan Fasting ‍During ‍March Madness

The⁤ early morning alarm⁣ of 4:30 ‍a.m. signals the start of a significant ‍day for Aly Khalifa, the⁤ 6-foot-11 ‍forward from Alexandria, Egypt,​ as he prepares for ⁣another day of NCAA Tournament action.​ Khalifa’s day begins with a simple‌ breakfast of scrambled⁢ eggs, yogurt, and fruit, followed by ⁤a long period of fasting that will last until the sun ⁤sets, in observance⁢ of Ramadan,⁣ the holiest month for Muslims.

For Khalifa, fasting during Ramadan is⁣ a​ deeply spiritual practice that serves‍ as a reminder of his religious obligations and a time for gratitude and reflection. Despite​ the challenges it‌ presents, especially during intense athletic competition, Khalifa approaches ​the fast with faith and determination.

The Sawm, one of the Five Pillars ⁢of Islam, requires ​healthy adults to abstain from food and drink during daylight hours throughout Ramadan. ⁣While exceptions exist for certain ‌groups,​ Khalifa has chosen to fully embrace the fast as a ‌test of his⁣ faith and commitment to his beliefs. With the support of his teammates and the BYU training staff, Khalifa has diligently prepared for the physical and mental demands of⁤ fasting while competing ​in​ the tournament.
