Hello, and welcome to Essential Guitar Tracks. Every seven days (or thereabouts), we bring you a selection of songs from the guitar universe, all featuring our favorite instrument. Our goal is to introduce the biggest tracks, our editor’s picks and anything you may have missed. We’re pushing boundaries and taking you out of your comfort zone – because, as guitarists, that’s something we should all be striving for in our playing.
Here are the highlights from the past seven days and a Spotify playlist.
For the latest Unprocessed cut, “Die on the Cross of the Martyr (feat. Tim Henson & Scott LePage),” three exceptional guitarists team up for a generational display of guitar playing prowess. Henson and LePage lend their boundless soloing chops to Manuel Gardner Fernandes, whose trademark percussive approach keeps the track ticking along. With distinct styles that push the boundaries of guitar music, listening to them all together is a mesmeric experience. (MO)
Today Was Yesterday’s “Grace (feat. Alex Lifeson)” features the iconic guitarist, Alex Lifeson, who has been busy since Rush, the Canadian prog icons, came to a close. Lifeson appears on six of 10 tracks on the duo’s forthcoming debut album. “Grace” is classic prog in the vein of Genesis, Yes, and, indeed, Rush, with mind-bending riffs, panoramic guitar soundscapes, and dynamic shifts aplenty. Lifeson’s powerful, timeless tonal palette is a great reminder of his musical brilliance. (MAB)
Guns N’ Roses’ new single “The General,” finds them channeling an air of mystery and intrigue. Inspired by the iconic Bond theme, “Live and Let Die,” the wailing, wah-ing Slash solo adds a great finishing touch. (JM)
The Gibson Band’s new track, “Deconstruction (ft. Serj Tankian, Tony Iommi & Cesar Gueikian),” features a revolving cast of big-name endorsee talent and a guest solo from guitar icon Tony Iommi. Tankian also makes an appearance on this exciting new concept track from the iconic guitar brand.
