Imagine a diverse crowd coming together for the greater good of humanity. The result is nothing short of magical.
This past week, Tennesseans of all races, colors, and creeds joined forces to celebrate International Human Rights Day. This remarkable event included the acknowledgment of leaders and the presentation of awards to human rights champions in three categories: Rising Advocate, Outstanding Service, and Lifetime Achievement.
The event was hosted by Muriel Nolen, the director of the Tennessee Human Rights Commission. Special remarks were also made by Rev. Davie Tucker, director of Metro Human Relations Commission, and David Whitfield, the president of the Nashville Cordell Hull chapter of the United Nations Association. The theme of “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All” was explored in depth by a panel led by David Plazas and Rabbi Michael Danziger.
It was a night of recognition, as the esteemed Ludye Wallace was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and several others were presented with the Outstanding Service and Rising Advocate Awards.
What made this event even more special is the collaboration of various human rights organizations, nonprofits, and advocates who come together each year to plan the celebration. It’s a day to not only remember past advances in human rights but to also inspire and recharge for the year ahead.
