IRONMAN World Champion Lucy Charles-Barclay and WTCS winner Beth Potter controversially missed out on BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year nomination. Potter won the top two awards at the Scottish Sports Awards, while Charles-Barclay received overwhelming support for being included in the nominations because of her record-breaking Kona win.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Mary Earps, Stuart Broad, Frankie Dettori, Alfie Hewett, and Rory McIlroy are among those shortlisted for the award this year. However, the announcement received criticism from fans for the exclusions of Charles-Barclay and Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Lucy Charles-Barclay is keen to follow in the footsteps of triathlon legend Chrissie Wellington, who was also snubbed for a nomination in an all-male shortlist. According to Wellington, it is crucial to celebrate achievements by female athletes to promote gender parity.
The winners will be announced on the 19th of December 2023. Fans also hope that the omission of Charles-Barclay and Potter won’t hinder the recognition of the incredible achievements in triathlon in their respective categories, which will be broadcasted live on BBC One.
