Inspired by Leonard Cohen’s song, “Famous Blue Raincoat, The FBR – fronted by Malarie McConaha and Tim Hunter – started as an acoustic project and has evolved into a blues-roots Southern rock band.

Lead guitarist and lead vocalist Malarie McConaha and acoustic guitarist and harmonica player Tim Hunter are the band’s songwriters.

Their latest single, “Empty Room,” is a haunting, bluesy track capturing a sense of loneliness through McConaha’s compelling vocals.

We caught up with Malarie McConaha to delve into her creative process, her guitars, and the inspiration behind the emotionally charged “Empty Room.”

What three things can’t you live without?

My friends/family, my instruments, my dogs!

Why do you make music?

I guess I don’t know how not to. It keeps me above water. So often I struggled to find the right words to express what was going on in my head. Music has always been a lifeline for me, providing a cathartic release and a sense of being heard. I want to share that experience with others!

What inspired your new single, “Empty Room?”

‘Empty Room’ allowed me to communicate complicated emotions in a healthier way. It captures the feelings of being alone and facing solitude, ultimately finding a sense of peace—an experience I wanted to share with our listeners.

How, where, and when did you first connect with Tim Hunter?

We met at an open mic night at Pucketts (now Fox & Locke) in Leipers Fork, Tennessee in 2014. Tim approached me after I sang ‘Hallelujah’ and recognized that I sang lesser-known Leonard Cohen verses. Our mutual love for Cohen brought us together, and almost a decade later, we’re still making music.
