Angel Reese is making a statement about the double standard in sports as she points out the differences in coverage of athletes Ja Morant and Quinn Ewers.
During a game, Quinn Ewers replicated a move similar to one made by Ja Morant recently. While the gestures were the same, the commentary about them was quite different, prompting Reese and others to react.
On Tuesday, Reese posted a comparison of the different coverage on her X page and the Barstool Sports page.
Barstool Sports called Morant’s gesture “Ja spraying imaginary bullets into section 113 after the slam,” and called Ewers’ “having fun.”
Last year, Reese faced criticism for her own gesture, and she took to social media to compare the two situations, calling out the glaring double standard.
Due to her hand motion, some people called the LSU star “rude” and “aggressive,” — microaggressions commonly used to insult Black women.
Reese defended her actions, asserting that she was merely being “unapologetically” herself and calling out what she perceives as a double standard in the treatment of female athletes.
She highlighted how people often ignore or even celebrate similar gestures by male athletes as displays of passion and competitive spirit.
“All year, I was critiqued for who I was. I don’t fit the narrative,” Reese said during a press conference after LSU’s win in April 2023.
