Apply Now: Join NASA’s Next Mars Habitat Simulation Mission

Exploring new horizons and seeking a break from the ordinary? Is life on Earth feeling a bit too much to handle right now? How about embarking on a one-year residency with three strangers at a simulated Mars habitat created by 3D printing?

Unique Opportunity at Mars Dune Alpha

NASA recently made an exciting announcement, inviting applications for the second phase of their ongoing Crew Health and Performance Analog (CHAPEA) project. This initiative involves a 12-month mission where a group of four individuals will live in Mars Dune Alpha, a 1,700-square-foot habitat located at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. During this immersive experience, participants will face challenges such as resource scarcity, equipment malfunctions, communication disruptions, and other stressors simulating life on Mars.

Dynamic Activities and Responsibilities

While partaking in this simulation of survival on a harsh Martian terrain, CHAPEA team members will engage in virtual reality spacewalk exercises, conduct maintenance tasks on the habitat structure, oversee robotic operations, and cultivate their own crops. Additionally, they will maintain physical fitness through regular exercise routines.

Application Requirements and Considerations

Interested candidates should note that certain criteria must be met to qualify for this extraordinary opportunity. These include holding a master’s degree in a STEM field such as engineering, computer science, or mathematics, along with either two years of relevant professional experience or a minimum of 1,000 hours of piloting aircraft. Applicants must be non-smokers aged between 30 and 55, with military background being advantageous.

Furthermore, aspirants will undergo a comprehensive screening process, featuring questions like, “Are you willing to endure extended periods of limited communication with your crew, with a 20-minute time delay?” and, “Are you prepared to consume shelf-stable space food exclusively for a year, without any say in the menu?”

Significance of Simulation Missions

While the challenges presented by CHAPEA may seem daunting, these simulations play a crucial role in NASA’s ambitious Artemis program, which aims to establish permanent human settlements on the moon and Mars. Prospective candidates have until April 2 to submit their applications through the official portal. The selected volunteers for the second phase will commence their mission in 2025, following in the footsteps of the current participants who are halfway through their year-long residency.
