Biden’s New Plan: Federal Work Travel to Go Carbon-Neutral

The Biden-Harris administration has unveiled an ambitious plan to make transportation sustainable in the future, starting with a focus on cutting emissions from federal employee travel.

The sheer scale of federal travel is staggering: In 2022, federal workers took over 5.3 million business-related trips, including 2.8 million flights, which would have resulted in an estimated 1.5 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions according to data from the FAA and the EIA.

The new federal work travel policy aims to set a cost-effective and climate-friendly example for future private sector travel, prioritizing sustainable options such as electric vehicles, rail travel for short distances, and public transit whenever feasible, according to Robin Carnahan, administrator of the General Services Administration.

In line with this, President Biden’s recent $8.2 billion investment in 10 new passenger rail lines and the first U.S. federal high-speed rail project is a significant step forward.

To ensure diverse sustainable travel options, the administration is collaborating with private sector partners in the hospitality, travel, and ride/rideshare industries, including American Express Global Business Travel, Hertz, and Marriott International, with a focus on expanding the availability of electric vehicles, EV chargers, and sustainable travel solutions.

The administration’s actions are driven by commitments to combat the climate crisis, save taxpayer dollars, and support the broader goals of President Biden’s Investing in America package, a $1.2 trillion infrastructure program that includes investments in highways, transit, rail, water, and electricity grid renewal.
