BMW SUVs Recalled After Takata Air Bag Inflator Shatters, Injuring Driver

BMW is recalling a small number of SUVs in the U.S. due to a potentially dangerous defect in the driver’s air bag inflators. The flaw could result in metal shrapnel being hurled and potentially causing harm to vehicle occupants in the event of a crash. The recall covers 486 X3, X4, and X5 SUVs from the 2014 model year, all of which are equipped with air bags made by Takata Corp. of Japan, according to U.S. auto safety regulators.

The recall raises concerns about the overall safety of approximately 30 million Takata inflators currently being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Takata inflators use volatile ammonium nitrate to inflate air bags during a crash, but the chemical can deteriorate over time, potentially causing the air bags to explode with too much force.

The consequences of this defect have already been severe, with at least 26 people killed in the U.S. and 30 more globally as a result of Takata inflators. This has led to the largest series of auto recalls in U.S. history, with 67 million Takata inflators involved and many yet to be repaired.

The recall of the BMW SUVs is particularly concerning because the inflators contain a moisture-absorbing chemical called dessicant, which has not been part of previous recalls. This raises new safety questions and concerns.

BMW has been investigating the issue, prompted by a complaint to NHTSA about a ruptured air bag in a 2014 X3. The findings so far point to a manufacturing problem between Feb. 22, 2014, and March 7, 2014. However, the exact cause has not yet been determined.

NHTSA records show a serious complaint in Chicago where the inflator on a 2014 X3 exploded into the driver’s lung, causing severe injuries. This has led to an investigation into Takata air bags with dessicant, covering more than 30 million inflators in over 200 models from 20 different car and truck makers.
