Bolsonaro’s Plot to Overturn Election Results Exposed in Court Records

The Alleged Plot to Reverse the 2022 Brazilian Presidential Election

Top military officials in Brazil have come forward with claims that former President Jair Bolsonaro put forth a scheme to overturn the outcome of the 2022 presidential election, as per court documents. This revelation sheds light on Bolsonaro’s purported involvement in efforts to undermine the election, which he narrowly lost to his left-leaning opponent, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In the recently released filings, former army and air force commanders testified that they rejected Bolsonaro’s proposal. They allegedly cautioned Bolsonaro that any move to nullify the election results could result in his arrest. These disclosures are part of multiple investigations that Bolsonaro is facing in Brazil’s Supreme Court, including one probing his suspected role in a 2023 attack on key government buildings following Lula’s inauguration.

The court documents include a federal police report detailing how Bolsonaro held impromptu meetings at the presidential palace post the 2022 election’s second round. During one of these sessions, Bolsonaro reportedly expressed his desire to form a commission to scrutinize the election’s validity. He also mentioned the possibility of using a state of siege decree to investigate further. Nevertheless, the commanders reaffirmed that the military was not in a position to reverse the election outcome at that time.

Former Air Force commander Brigadier Carlos de Almeida Baptista Junior also stood against Bolsonaro’s plans, crediting the army commander’s refusal as pivotal in halting Bolsonaro. The court filings cite General Freire Gomes stating that he would have had to arrest the president if he proceeded with his intentions.

As the investigations continue, prosecutors are delving into whether Bolsonaro and his inner circle conspired to orchestrate a military coup to overturn the election. In February, authorities seized Bolsonaro’s passport during raids. A court order from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes revealed that Bolsonaro had received a draft decree in November 2022, which, if enacted, would have annulled the election results and led to the arrest of key figures, including Justice Moraes and other officials.

Despite Bolsonaro’s suggested modifications to the draft decree, the amended version still called for the arrest of Justice Moraes and proposed a new round of presidential elections. These developments underscore the gravity of the allegations against Bolsonaro and the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the 2022 Brazilian election. [Source: Al Jazeera]
