Upgrade Your AirPods Max with a USB-C Port
If you were disappointed by Apple’s lack of updates for the AirPods Max in 2023, you’re not alone. Since their release in 2020, these high-end headphones have remained unchanged, still featuring the outdated Lightning port. But fear not, as engineer Ken Pillonel has taken matters into his own hands to give these headphones a much-needed upgrade.
DIY USB-C Mod
Pillonel recently shared a video on his YouTube channel, Exploring the Simulation, detailing how to add a USB-C port to the AirPods Max. Surprisingly, the process is relatively simple and doesn’t require any advanced tools. All you need is a USB-C Flex board, which can be purchased for around $45. While this mod adds USB-C charging capability, it does not enable USB-C audio due to hardware limitations.
Seamless Integration
By carefully replacing the Lightning port with the USB-C plug, Pillonel ensures a seamless fit without the need for extensive modifications. The new connector sits above the existing board, specially designed to avoid interfering with any critical components. After thorough testing, Pillonel managed to create a second version of the board to reduce strain on surrounding parts.
Take Control of Your Headphones
If you’re tired of waiting for Apple to catch up and equip the AirPods Max with a USB-C port, now is your chance to take matters into your own hands. By following Pillonel’s instructions, you can enjoy the convenience of USB-C charging without having to invest in a new pair of headphones. Just remember, performing this modification will void your warranty.
