British Ship Attacked by Houthi Strikes Sinks in Red Sea

In February, the M/V Rubymar, a British bulk carrier carrying Ukrainian grain, tragically sank in the Red Sea after being targeted by Houthi rebels. This incident has raised concerns about the potential environmental impact on Yemen’s territorial waters and the Red Sea, with officials warning of a possible catastrophe.

The vessel, laden with 41,000 tons of fertilizer, fell victim to an unprovoked missile strike by Iran-backed Houthi militants on February 18. The attack not only caused the ship to take on water but also resulted in a significant oil slick, heightening fears of an environmental disaster.

Prior to its sinking, the Rubymar was awaiting assistance to tow it to the port of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. However, following the missile attack, the crew had no choice but to abandon ship as it succumbed to the damage inflicted by the militants.

It is important to note that the Houthi rebels, based in Yemen, have been targeting vessels associated with Israeli companies or those transporting goods to and from Israel in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Their aggressive actions have prompted joint military strikes by the United States and Britain in an effort to neutralize the threat.

In response to the attack on the Rubymar, ports in Aden and Djibouti refused to accept the vessel, leaving it adrift until its eventual sinking. The sinking of the Rubymar serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing conflict in the region and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent parties.
