Police recover weapon used in New York subway shooting
On Thursday night, a 36-year-old man was critically injured in a shooting incident on a crowded New York subway train. Transit Chief Michael Kemper of the New York City Police Department revealed during a press conference that the shooting took place on a northbound A train around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday.
The altercation began when a 32-year-old individual boarded the train at the Nostrand Avenue station, where the victim was already located. Despite authorities confirming that the shooter acted in self-defense, they disclosed that criminal charges would not be pursued.
Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Oren Yaniv stated, “The investigation is still ongoing, but based on the evidence of self-defense, we are refraining from filing any criminal charges against the shooter.” Although there is no indication that the two men had any prior connection, eyewitnesses reported that the older individual displayed aggressive behavior towards the younger man.
Video footage of the incident showed the intense exchange between the two men, ultimately culminating in the 36-year-old retrieving a gun from his jacket’s pocket. The younger man managed to disarm him and fire at least one shot, causing injuries that required immediate medical attention.
In response to the terrifying ordeal, MTA Chairman Janno Lieber emphasized the need for stricter gun control measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by firearms and the importance of maintaining public safety on public transportation systems.
