Expansion Plans Unveiled by Caterpillar in Lafayette, Indiana
Caterpillar has disclosed its intentions to undertake a significant $725 million expansion of its Large Engine Center located in Lafayette, Indiana. This facility is known for producing engines utilized in a wide array of industries such as oil and gas, electric power, marine, rail, and mining. This development was reported by Inside Indiana Business.
The earmarked investment will be allocated towards acquiring new machinery equipment, enhancing on-site rail infrastructure, and constructing a 300,000-square-foot extension to augment the existing 1.6 million-square-foot premises. It is anticipated that the expansion project will conclude by the end of 2026, with the installation of the new equipment scheduled for 2027.
According to the documentation submitted to the city, Caterpillar mentioned that this initiative stands out as one of the most substantial investments in the history of the Lafayette facility since its inception.
At present, the facility employs a workforce of 1900 individuals, and with the projected expansion, around 100 new job opportunities are expected to be created within the next four years. These roles are anticipated to offer an average hourly wage of $27.20, consequently contributing more than $5.6 million to the facility’s overall payroll.
In response to this development, representatives from Caterpillar conveyed to Equipment World, “In line with our disclosures during our 4Q Earnings call, Caterpillar is embarking on a substantial, multi-year capital expenditure scheme for our large engine division. This initiative encompasses augmenting capacity for manufacturing new engines and producing aftermarket components to better cater to the escalating demands of our clientele. As part of this strategy, we are conducting thorough site evaluations and exploring options for expansion, including leveraging the existing Lafayette campus.”
