Collaboration for Advancing Liquid Hydrogen Transport

On February 14, 2024, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) from Japan joined forces with Woodside, HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), and Hyundai Glovis from South Korea to delve into the development of bulk marine transportation solutions for liquid hydrogen.

Objective and Timeline

Having initiated the project back in 2022, Woodside, HD KSOE, and Hyundai Glovis have now expanded their collaboration to include MOL. The non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) aims to collectively explore the technology, safety, construction, operation, and economics of a carrier with an 80,000 cubic meter tank capacity.

The ultimate goal is to establish a robust liquefied hydrogen supply chain in Asia and beyond. Should a project materialize from the MoU, the target is to have the vessel constructed and operational by 2030. The vessel’s concept design emphasizes the use of hydrogen as the primary fuel source to significantly reduce CO2 emissions during operation.

Roles and Responsibilities

The discussions between the collaborating parties outline that, in the event of a project fruition from the MoU, Woodside will oversee the production and storage of hydrogen at loading and discharging ports, with HD KSOE leading the design and construction of the carrier.

Hyundai Glovis and MOL will contribute their expertise towards ship operational aspects within the vessel design, encompassing logistics, propulsion, storage, and cargo handling.

In 2023, DNV granted an approval in principle (AiP) to HD KSOE and its subsidiaries, HD Hyundai Heavy Industry (HD HHI), and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), endorsing their hydrogen system for a liquefied hydrogen carrier. The system leverages boil-off gas from hydrogen transport for a hybrid propulsion system that integrates hydrogen DF engines and fuel cells.
