If there was a prize for the pedal name that best describes its effect, Death By Audio’s Octave Clang would definitely be a top contender.
After fifteen years, the brand has reintroduced this pseudo-ring/distortion/noise/octave pedal, which has been upgraded to be larger, more daring, and more adaptable than ever.
Following the success of the vintage sci-fi-sounding Space Bender chorus in 2022, the manufacturer went back to the drawing board to create a wilder and more user-friendly second version of the Octave Clang.
This triple threat pedal features a unique tonality derived from a carefully selected transformer and precision-matched diodes. By combining this circuitry with two out-of-phase copies of the input signal, the pedal delivers rich harmonics and a pure, analog octave up effect.
While the pedal is well-suited for playing single notes, it truly shines when used with chords and complex note stacks, offering a chaotic and organic sound experience.
The pedal’s improvements include extended control options, with Volume, Intensity, and Shape knobs, as well as a bypass footswitch. An additional octave footswitch allows players to engage the ring modulation effect as desired.
With a wide range of output controls, the pedal can go from completely silent to extremely loud, thanks to a pre-gain tone circuit with tilt EQ for added power under the hood.
One of the standout features of the enhanced pedal is the ability to achieve up to +39dB of gain boost, along with the option to mis-bias the distortion circuitry for a rougher sound.
Featuring top-mounted inputs and outputs, the Octave Clang is pedalboard-friendly, although its slightly larger size may require some adjustments. Made in the USA and powered by a standard 9V supply, it is priced at $225, making it a more affordable option compared to other methods of achieving a similar sound.
The pedal will be available for purchase starting March 14. For more details, visit the official Death By Audio website.
