NTT DOCOMO, a prominent mobile operator in Japan, has announced partnerships with Ooredoo, Smart Communications, and StarHub to conduct field trials aimed at advancing the global adoption of mobile networks based on Open RAN architecture. This initiative will help bridge communication gaps worldwide by promoting open, interoperable interfaces and virtualization.
Ooredoo will collaborate with DOCOMO to conduct a verification test this year to simulate the operation of a commercial Open RAN, with the goal of future adoption in the Middle East. The trial will utilize Fujitsu’s base station software, Wind River’s cloud infrastructure, NVIDIA’s accelerator, and Dell Technologies’ compute infrastructure.
Smart and DOCOMO have also agreed to conduct a trial this year, following a successful test conducted by Smart using DOCOMO’s OREX Packages solutions in January 2023. Smart was the first company in the Philippines to successfully complete a RAN Intelligent Controller proof of concept.
Additionally, DOCOMO will conduct a field test with StarHub after an initial Open RAN verification test, paving the way for the expansion of StarHub’s new business utilizing Open RAN. DOCOMO remains committed to supporting global telecom operators in their adoption of Open RAN through its OREX offerings, collaborating with partners worldwide to make Open RAN a widespread reality.
