Ellen Pompeo’s departure from Grey’s Anatomy has been a hot topic, and she’s back in a big way in the Season 20 premiere trailer.
ABC released new footage of Meredith Grey’s return to the medical drama. Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy premieres on March 14, almost a year after Pompeo’s final appearance as a series regular.
This upcoming season is the first where she is not part of the main cast. Season 19 saw Pompeo’s understated goodbye, leaving many fans unsatisfied. But now we know that it truly was just a “see ya later.”
“I’m only going to Boston and, you know. I’ll probably be here next week,” was Meredith’s parting line in season 19. In real time, “next week” meant months later, but she wasn’t joking!
When Pompeo’s contract was up around Season 17, the fate of Grey’s Anatomy was uncertain. It looked like she would leave or the show would end, but neither of those happened. Now, the show continues with Pompeo in a different role and a new storyline for Meredith. In fact, she’ll still provide the voice-over and is excited about what’s to come.
Pompeo reunited with Katherine Heigl for Variety’s Actors on Actors series and explained the nature of her departure. “Meredith’s goodbye is a little bit of trickery because I’m not completely gone,” she told Heigl. “Actually, the storyline is very cool. There’s a lot of real research that’s changing very rapidly about Alzheimer’s disease and about what they believe is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease.” She also hinted at future appearances.
The Season 20 first look trailer hints at Meredith’s return to Grey Sloan Memorial, leaving us with plenty of questions.
