The music streaming industry in the EU is in for some big changes, all in the name of promoting smaller artists and making sure everyone gets paid fairly. The European Parliament has taken a stand, calling for action to address the issues of low streaming royalties for artists and biased algorithms that favor the big names.
This resolution, adopted by MEPs, aims to ensure that European music gets the attention it deserves on platforms like Spotify, without being overshadowed by the sheer volume of content. It also pushes for fairer royalty rates and more exposure for European artists.
But that’s not all – streaming companies are being urged to be transparent about their use of AI in music creation, to prevent unauthorized use of artists’ work, and to level the playing field for smaller players in the industry.
While the resolution is a step in the right direction, it’s nonlegislative and will need the European Commission to take action. This could take some time, but it shows that the EU is serious about making the music industry better for everyone involved.
