EU Slaps Apple with Record $1.95 Billion Antitrust Fine for Music Streaming

EU regulators fining Apple €1.8 billion over Apple Music

European Commission Fines Apple €1.8 Billion for Antitrust Violation

In a significant move, the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, imposed a staggering 1.8 billion euro ($1.95 billion) fine on Apple for engaging in anticompetitive behavior within the music streaming app market.

Abuse of Dominant Position

The commission’s investigation revealed that Apple had placed unjustified restrictions on app developers, preventing them from informing iOS users about more affordable music subscription services outside of the official app store. Additionally, Apple prohibited these developers from providing any instructions on how users could access these alternative services, ultimately limiting consumer choice and competitive pricing in the market.

Long-Standing Issue

Apple’s anticompetitive practices reportedly spanned nearly a decade, impacting the pricing structure of music streaming subscriptions for iOS users. The high commission fees imposed by Apple on developers were passed on to consumers, resulting in inflated subscription prices on the Apple App Store.

Apple’s Response

Following the fine, Apple issued a robust response, highlighting Spotify as a major beneficiary of the EU decision. Apple emphasized that Spotify, a dominant player in the music streaming industry, has significantly benefited from Apple’s technology and services but pays nothing for these privileges.

Apple clarified that Spotify sells subscriptions through its own platform rather than the iOS app, bypassing Apple’s commission fees. This business model has allowed Spotify to attain a substantial market share in Europe without incurring expenses to Apple.

Despite Apple’s arguments, developers have consistently criticized the 30% fee charged by Apple for in-app purchases. Spotify expressed support for the commission’s ruling, emphasizing the importance of promoting a more open and competitive internet environment for consumers.

Overall, the fine imposed on Apple serves as a clear message to technology companies regarding the consequences of anticompetitive practices and the importance of fostering a fair marketplace for all stakeholders.
