IRONMAN has recently announced a new collaboration for the IRONMAN Pro Series, partnering with RaceRanger to introduce their advanced electronic drafting detection technology in 2024.
This innovative technology is aimed at supporting referees in identifying whether athletes are drafting during races, ultimately promoting fairness in the sport.
Not only will RaceRanger technology be utilized in the series races, but it will also be implemented at prestigious events such as the IRONMAN World Championship in Nice and Kona, along with the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupo.
Understanding the Technology
Prior to each race, professional athletes will have RaceRanger devices equipped on their bikes. These devices leverage Ultrawideband (UWB), Bluetooth, GPS/GNSS, and 4G/LTE technology to provide accurate drafting detection.

During the race, sensors within the devices, placed on the front fork and seat post, will illuminate an external light detection system. This feature enables professional athletes to be aware of their position relative to the drafting zone.
Furthermore, the RaceRanger unit will continuously collect data throughout the race, offering insights such as the duration each athlete spends in the draft zone.
Exciting Partnership Development
Jimmy Riccitello, IRONMAN’s Rules and Project Coordinator, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with RaceRanger. He emphasized the positive results from testing at the 2023 IRONMAN Florida triathlon, leading to the decision to integrate the technology into the 2024 IRONMAN Pro Series races.
Co-founder and former professional triathlete, James Elvery, echoed Riccitello’s sentiments, highlighting the significance of enhancing race fairness moving forward. He spoke of the pride within the RaceRanger team for achieving this milestone after over a decade of development.
The partnership between IRONMAN and RaceRanger signifies a significant advancement in leveraging technology to uphold fairness and integrity in triathlon events. Both parties are committed to enhancing the sporting experience and ensuring a level playing field for all athletes.
