Step into the world of rosé, like the color of a sunset, and experience the taste of summer in a glass. With every fizzy sip, savor the flavors of fresh strawberries and ripe fruit. Sitting on the terrace at White Castle Vineyard in Monmouthshire on a scorching June day, it feels like a scene from the South of France with rolling vines and drowsy bees. It’s the least Welsh of settings, but the allure is undeniable.
Owner Robb Merchant, with the unmistakable Welsh lilt, eagerly shares the story of one of Wales’s most progressive wineries. Despite the scorching heat and sunburnt grapes, Robb exudes enthusiasm for his vineyard.
In 1995, Robb and his wife, Nicola, took on the challenge of cultivating a 12-acre small holding, fulfilling Nicola’s dream of owning a vineyard. With their perseverance, they planted their first 4,000 vines in 2008, including a variety of grapes, even the difficult-to-grow pinot noir précoce.
Red grapes in Wales may seem unconventional, but White Castle Vineyard has defied the odds. Robb proudly shares how their red wine has earned recognition, shocking connoisseurs and winning prestigious awards.
As the world of Welsh wine continues to evolve, Robb and Nicola’s dedication to their craft has paid off. Their gold-winning pinot noir reserve and pinot noir précoce reserve have proven that Welsh wine holds its own against well-established competitors.
Traveling through the picturesque Welsh countryside, the journey to White Castle Vineyard is an adventure in itself. With the Black Mountains in the distance and the temperature rising, the anticipation for a refreshing glass of Welsh wine grows stronger.
