Experience the Luxury: Inside my $6,970-a-Month Apartment in Geneva, Switzerland

Being an expatriate has been a defining part of my identity. Originally from Japan, I have resided in a total of six countries throughout my life. For the past 15 years, Geneva, Switzerland, has been my home base.

When my former husband and I made the decision to relocate to Geneva, our first child was just 10 months old. We sought a change of pace from the fast-paced lifestyles we were accustomed to in New York and London, where we worked demanding jobs in investment banking.

Raising our family in Geneva has brought immense joy and fulfillment. Despite no longer being together romantically, my ex and I successfully co-parent our two teenagers. Conveniently, his residence is only a brief five-minute walk away from mine. Geneva holds a unique charm unlike any other place I have resided in, and it has proven to be an ideal environment for me.

### Exploring Our Geneva Residence

Upon moving into our Geneva apartment, I was immediately struck by its traditional allure and intricately designed ceilings. The spacious entryway leads to two bathrooms situated near the foyer, with one featuring a bathtub and the other housing a shower and a washer-dryer unit.

The kitchen, located to the right of the entrance, serves as the heart of our home. It is where my daughter indulges in her passion for baking, while my son eagerly plays the role of taste-tester. Adorning the walls are cherished pieces of artwork created by my children during their formative years.

Unlike residences in the United States, European homes typically lack abundant storage space. To compensate for the absence of built-in wardrobes, we have creatively utilized closets in the entrance area and drawers in the kids’ rooms.

Our apartment consists of three bedrooms, with mine doubling as a workspace for my venture, AVoyage. Launched in 2022 after years of consulting, AVoyage empowers women to take charge of their financial futures.

### Embracing the Cost of Living in Geneva

Our lease terms are flexible, with any rent adjustments being tied to an index based on inflation rates. Over the past 15 years, we have not encountered any significant increases in rent, largely due to the stable inflation environment in Geneva.

Monthly expenditures include $6,970 for rent, $384 for parking, $1,452 for health insurance, $578 for heating, and $266 for internet and phone services. Additionally, the public school system in Geneva is commendable, though childcare arrangements can become costly due to the absence of classes on Wednesday afternoons.

Transitioning from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan cities to the tranquil setting of Geneva has been a transformative experience for me and my family. Our Geneva abode symbolizes the harmonious blend of traditional European charm with the practicalities of modern living.
