Exploring Nature and Music: Gabe Mangold’s Unique Journey
Gabe Mangold has a passion for both nature and heavy metal music, which has shaped his life for the past seven years. Before joining American deathcore band Enterprise Earth in 2017, he embarked on a journey of self-discovery by converting a trailer into a studio and traveling across the American West while creating powerful riffs.
Seeking a new perspective, Mangold found himself in the hippie town of Taos, New Mexico, learning how to build Earthships (solar homes). Feeling a lack of roots and stability, he embraced the nomadic lifestyle and lived out of his Subaru Forester for six months before upgrading to a trailer that could accommodate him and his collection of eight guitars. This mobile studio allowed him the freedom to explore different locations and draw inspiration from his surroundings.
Mangold believes that inspiration should not be confined by location; creativity can flourish regardless of where you are. His trailer, named Nessa, served as the recording studio for Enterprise Earth’s latest album, “Death: An Anthology.” Despite being in the middle of the desert, Mangold utilized his in-the-box production skills, relying on his laptop and Quad Cortex to create innovative and diverse sounds for the album.
The use of automation and pitch-shifting techniques is prevalent throughout the record, enhancing the band’s signature heavy sound with new and experimental elements. Mangold’s approach to songwriting involves incorporating quirky effects while maintaining a cohesive flow in the music. For example, tracks like “Psalm of Agony” and “Face of Fear” showcase his manipulation of pitch-shifting and automation to create unique textures and dynamics.
Regarding tone, Mangold expresses his fondness for the 5153 red channel mode on the Quad Cortex, highlighting its impact on shaping the band’s sound. His dedication to pushing the boundaries of music production reflects his commitment to innovation and creativity in the metal genre.
In conclusion, Gabe Mangold’s unconventional journey of blending nature and heavy metal music has led to the creation of a distinct sound that sets Enterprise Earth apart in the music industry. By embracing the freedom of mobility and the power of technology, Mangold continues to evolve as a musician and producer, leaving a lasting impact on the metal scene.
