The renowned Iris Apfel has passed away at the age of 102.
Her Instagram page shared the sad news on Friday along with a photo of Apfel in a striking black and gold gown, wearing her signature black glasses, with red lips and nails adding to her classic look.
The caption on the photo read, “Iris Barrel Apfel, August 29, 1921 – March 1, 2024.”
The fashion icon died in her Florida home, with limited details known about her passing.
Stu Loeser, a spokesperson for her estate, confirmed her passing to the New York Times, revealing that she died in her Palm Beach, Fla. residence. However, the cause of her death remains undisclosed.
Following the news, many took to social media to express their condolences.
Her unique sense of style, marked by colorful clothes, numerous jewelry pieces, and oversized glasses, served as the inspiration for a notable exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005, elevating her to an iconic status.
Prior to her fashion influence, Apfel had a diverse career path that included stints as a copywriter, textile mogul, and interior designer. She also contributed to various projects at the White House under nine different presidents.
Beginning her career as a copywriter for Women’s Wear Daily and working as an interior designer for Elinor Johnson, she later ventured into the textile industry when she and her husband Carl Apfel co-founded a textile firm in 1948, managing it for over four decades until their retirement.
Notably, Apfel was involved in design restoration efforts at the White House across the administrations of nine presidents, illustrating her significant impact on the intersection of style and politics.
