Big changes are coming to Formula 1 in 2026, but teams have been banned from starting work on their new cars until 2024.

The championship intends to keep its technical regulations largely stable for the next two seasons and then introduce a major overhaul for 2026. These include radical changes to the chassis regulations, which are under discussion, and the first change in power unit rules since 2014, with details already agreed.

Teams are already facing strict limits on the number of real and computer-simulated aerodynamic tests they can perform, linked to their performance each season, giving the least competitive teams in the constructors’ championship the most development time to encourage them to catch up.

However, to limit the extent of the advantage a team can gain with the 2026 designs, the FIA has imposed new restrictions that will allow teams to start work on these designs only the year before they are introduced.

The updated sporting regulations for the 2024 F1 season state: “To prevent testing aimed at development for the 2026 season, from 12/01/2023 to 01/01/2025 inclusive, restricted wind tunnel testing may only be performed with a model substantially compliant with the 2023, 2024 or 2025 F1 technical regulations.”

“With the exception of dynamometer testing for brake system components and air ducts, and provided that these tests are not conducted simultaneously on the performance or endurance of parts or systems classified as part of the bodywork, no wind tunnel test may be conducted using a car geometry partially or fully compliant and/or substantially derived from the published projects and/or versions of the 2026 F1 technical regulations or the geometries and bodywork concepts proposed by the FIA for 2026.”

Similar language has been added to regulations prohibiting computer simulations regarding fluid dynamics on parts built to comply with the 2026 technical regulations.

It should be noted that no limitations on the chassis or suspension for 2026 have been set, so a team will be free to start studies as soon as the regulations are published. However, the FIA and the F1 technical working group will have until at least June 2024 to arrive at a near-final version.
