We are sad to hear that Ryan Minor, a figure of great importance in the Orioles’ lineup and the Minor League, has passed away at the age of 49 after a courageous battle with Stage 4 colon cancer. Minor, who played four seasons in the big leagues, was a beloved figure in both the MLB and the Orioles’ Minor League system, where he managed both the Delmarva Shorebirds and the Frederick Keys.
On a historical note, it was Minor who replaced Cal Ripken Jr. in the Iron Man’s legendary streak, an event that marked the end of Ripken’s run of 2,632 consecutive games played. Minor’s career was marked by memorable moments, including his time with the Delmarva Shorebirds and his nine-game stint with the Orioles.
Minor was a talented athlete, excelling in both baseball and basketball during his time at the University of Oklahoma. His potential in both sports was recognized when he was selected by both the Mets and the 76ers in their respective drafts. Despite initially pursuing professional basketball, Minor ultimately found his calling in professional baseball, leaving behind a legacy marked by significant contributions to both the MLB and the Orioles’ Minor League system.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Ryan Minor, but his impact on the game and the Orioles’ organization will always be remembered.
