It feels like just yesterday when I was writing the introduction post for Golden Dukes 2022 to kick off TPM’s troll awards season. Back then, I had no idea who George Santos was. Little did I know that he would become a central figure in the whirlwind of scandal and revelations that followed.
At that time, our discussions revolved around the antics of now-disgraced figures like Ron DeSantis, Blake Masters, and Dr. Oz. While it wasn’t a simpler time, in retrospect, it was certainly less entertaining.
But along came George Santos, taking us back to a time of innocence in the world of public corruption. Sure, he defrauded donors and spent campaign funds on Botox, but he also pretended to be a volleyball star and the son of a 9/11 victim, and made creative use of the term “jew-ish”. And who could forget the infamous dog incident and the fake baby theft?
Despite his dubious actions, Santos gave political enthusiasts a much-needed gift—the ability to laugh without feeling too disgusted, after years of Trump’s tumultuous presidency and the ongoing pandemic trauma.
Now, TPM’s public corruption Oscars are back, marking the return of the most wonderful time of the year where we will recognize 2023’s sleaziest scoundrels and greatest grifters.
