The data center, once operational, will contribute to Google’s computing capacity and benefit millions of users in the UK and beyond.

Highlighting its environmental goals, Google aims to power its entire infrastructure, including data centers, with carbon-free energy by 2030. A notable step in this direction is a power purchase agreement with ENGIE for offshore wind energy in Scotland, aligning with Google’s commitment to achieving 90% carbon-free energy in the UK by 2025.

In a bid to tackle increased water consumption, Google is exploring sustainable methods to utilize the heat generated by these data centers. Additionally, the company is actively working to capture this heat for repurposing in local communities.

Despite a slight decrease in carbon-free energy usage in 2022, attributed to the growing demand for clean energy driven by the rapid advancements in AI products, Google remains dedicated to its environmental approach.

Underscoring its interest in the UK, Google has previously made significant investments, such as acquiring the Central Saint Giles and establishing the Accessibility Discovery Centre in London. These ventures, along with the development of the Grace Hopper trans-Atlantic cable, underscore Google’s substantial economic contribution to the UK.
