The Evolution of iPhone Autocorrect: Is It Too Aggressive?

Have you observed a significant increase in the aggressiveness of iPhone autocorrect? You’re not alone. In September 2023, Apple introduced iOS 17 with the promise of “even more accurate autocorrect.” However, many users have expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived increase in annoyance caused by autocorrect on platforms like Reddit.

While the update has made swearing easier by reducing the occurrences of autocorrect altering profanity, some users find the overall autocorrect experience overwhelming. Fortunately, there are ways to address this issue.

Embrace the Blue Underlines

There are instances when intentional misspellings are used for humorous or creative purposes, only to be corrected by autocorrect. This can stifle your creativity. However, you can revert these corrections by tapping on the underlined word in blue to reveal the original text and then tapping on that to preserve your intended wordplay. This way, your wit remains intact, potentially earning you recognition.

If this process seems cumbersome, an alternative method involves using the predictive text field above the keyboard. Enter a word unrecognized by autocorrect, displayed on the left side of the field in quotes, and tap on it to prevent its correction.

Customize Autocorrect

If specific words consistently fall victim to autocorrect, such as unique names or local terms, you can add them to your text replacement library to prevent unwanted alterations. Here’s how:

  • Open the Settings app and navigate to General
  • Click on Keyboard
  • Access Text replacement
  • Add the prone-to-correction words as Phrases without shortcuts. This action will safeguard these terms from autocorrect interference.

Disable Autocorrect Completely on Your iPhone

If you are constantly annoyed by autocorrect, there is a simple solution – just turn it off. By going to your iPhone’s settings, specifically the General > Keyboard section, you can easily disable autocorrect with just a few taps.

In the event that autocorrect keeps causing you grief, there is no need to panic. You have the option to completely deactivate this feature. All you need to do is navigate to the Settings app on your iPhone and then go to General > Keyboard. From there, you can simply tap on the option to Turn off autocorrect, and voila, autocorrect will be disabled entirely.

By following these steps, you can eliminate the pesky autocorrect feature that might be causing you frustration. Instead of constantly having to deal with incorrect corrections, you can take control of your device and turn off autocorrect for good.
