Angela Chao, the sister-in-law of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), is currently the subject of a “criminal investigation” following her tragic death. The CEO of Foremost Group, a New York-based dry bulk shipping company, Chao was discovered dead in her submerged vehicle in a pond on a ranch in Johnson City, near Austin, on Feb. 11, as reported by the New York Post. Law enforcement officials are treating her death as a potential crime. The ranch where the incident occurred is linked to Chao’s husband, Jim Breyer.
According to information from Fox Business, emergency medical services attempted to rescue Chao, but she ultimately succumbed to drowning. The Blanco County Sheriff’s Office noted that the crash was not a typical accident in a letter to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Foremost Group, founded by Chao’s parents in 1964, saw her rise through the ranks to become the chair and CEO in 2018. She had previously held roles as vice president, focusing on ship operations and management before being promoted to senior vice president with increased responsibilities. Chao, who graduated Magna cum Laude from Harvard with a degree in economics and later attended Harvard Business School, is remembered by Foremost Group for her groundbreaking leadership in shipping, philanthropy, and the arts.
