An intense altercation between referees at a youth basketball game in Colorado turned violent, with punches being thrown in front of a crowd of kids. The shocking incident is now under investigation by police, according to TMZ Sports.
The ugly scene unfolded during a 4th-grade boys hoops game between Cherry Creek and Legend Blue over the weekend at the Gold Crown Field House in Lakewood, CO, and was captured on video.
The footage shows two referees getting into a physical altercation on the court after a disagreement, with one of the refs throwing a massive punch that knocked down the other official.
Additional punches were attempted by the instigating ref, but bystanders were able to intervene and prevent further violence.
Following the initial altercation, the ref who had been knocked down got back on his feet and engaged in a standoff with another official, but thankfully, no further punches were thrown.
Lakewood Police confirmed they are investigating the incident, revealing that no arrests had been made as the involved parties had already left the gym by the time they arrived on the scene.
The Gold Crown Foundation reported that no one was injured during the fight. However, all the referees involved have been suspended indefinitely. “We have informed these independently contracted officials that they are suspended indefinitely from working for Gold Crown Foundation,” said a statement from GCF.
“Most importantly we apologize to everyone that had to witness their unacceptable behavior – especially the kids,” the statement continued. “We look forward to getting our league back on track, and resume what will be a great season for the kids.”
