Iran’s Ambitious Pursuit of Advanced Cruise Missiles for Naval Arsenal

Iran’s navy has received an upgrade with the addition of a domestically produced cruise missile that has a range of hundreds of miles, according to Iranian state media. The Talaeieh cruise missile, described as “fully smart,” has a range of over 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) and the capability to change targets after launch, Iran’s navy chief, Adm. Shahram Irani, announced. Another cruise missile, the Nasi, with a 62-mile (100-kilometer) range, can be installed on warships, Irani added. Both cruise missiles have been delivered to a naval base near the Indian Ocean in the southern Iranian port of Konarak, approximately 850 miles (1,400 kilometers) southeast of Tehran. The announcement follows a Pentagon statement that an Iranian drone struck a Liberian-flagged chemical tanker on Sunday about 120 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of the Indian port of Veraval. Iran occasionally publicizes the testing, production, and commissioning of new military equipment that cannot be independently verified. The country claims to possess a stock of various missiles with ranges of up to 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers), capable of reaching Israel and U.S. bases in the region.
