The Ironman Foundation Unveils Scholarship Program to Boost Diversity in Triathlon
The Ironman Foundation recently introduced the Race For Change Scholarship initiative with the aim of aiding individuals from marginalized communities who aspire to participate in an IM or IM 70.3 race. For the upcoming 2024 North American race season, the foundation will grant up to three Race For Change Scholarships, each valued at up to $10,000 USD. Beneficiaries will receive coaching, race entries, essential triathlon and training gear, travel expenses, accommodations, and more.
Campaign Aimed at Increasing Diversity in Triathlon
The Race For Change Scholarship was specifically designed to provide support to those from underrepresented communities who have an interest in triathlons but may face barriers to entry. The program welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds, including people of color, individuals with disabilities, those from underprivileged backgrounds, and others, to apply. Applications will be open until Thursday, February 29, 2024. Those interested in applying can visit the Foundation’s website.
Empowering Diverse Athletes in Triathlon
Shane Facteau, Chief Operating Officer of The IM Group and President of The IM Foundation, emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity in triathlon. The Race For Change Scholarship program aims to eliminate obstacles and welcome a more diverse group of individuals into the sport, supporting the development of the next generation of competitive athletes, coaches, and trailblazers.
Support from Esteemed Triathlete
Sika Henry, the first Black female professional triathlete in the United States, will continue her role as an ambassador for the Race For Change program in 2024. Working alongside The Ironman Foundation, Henry will focus on identifying and addressing participation barriers that affect Black and other diverse athlete groups in triathlon. She will also collaborate on community outreach initiatives to enhance inclusivity within the sport.
Enhancing Diversity and Inclusivity in Triathlon
In 2020, The IRONMAN Foundation and The Ironman Group launched the Race For Change program with a commitment of $1 million to promote diversity and inclusivity in triathlon. Since its inception, the program has evolved to not only remove barriers to entry but also create opportunities for greater inclusivity within the sport.
By supporting initiatives like the Race For Change Scholarship, The Ironman Foundation is taking proactive steps to foster diversity and inclusivity in the world of triathlon, paving the way for a more equitable and vibrant athletic community.
