Do you feel that your rocking chair is relaxing, but a rocking toilet provides exactly the opposite feeling? The unsettling sensation of a wobbling toilet may actually indicate a larger plumbing problem. Scroll down to know more about the causes of a rocking toilet and how to fix it!
A rocking or wobbling toilet usually indicates an issue with its connection to the floor and the sewer line. In order to fix this problem, it’s important to first understand what’s causing it. Lifehacker has gathered the expert advice of three plumbers and a general contractor to provide some insight into the most common causes of a rocking toilet, potential DIY repairs, and why it’s crucial to address the issue immediately.
Why is my toilet wobbling?
According to Roy Barnes, a seasoned plumber with around 30 years of experience, a good connection between the base of the toilet and the sewer line it feeds into requires three key components:
-
The flange: This is the wide ring at the top of the sewer line, and it helps create an effective seal. “These flanges can deteriorate with age and should be inspected if there are problems,” says Barnes.
-
The wax ring: This ring creates the airtight and watertight seal between the porcelain toilet and the PVC or metal sewer drain.
-
The base of the toilet: It must be sound, without hairline cracks or age-related wear.
A rocking toilet can be due to damaged wax rings, loose toilet bolts, uneven or damaged sub-flooring, and other factors listed below. Experts warn that although there are temporary fixes, it’s essential to address the root cause immediately to avoid more severe issues.
