László Nemes Takes Aim at Oscar Winner Jonathan Glazer: Why He Believes Glazer Should Have Kept Quiet

According to László Nemes, the filmmaker behind the highly-praised Holocaust movie Son of Saul, he has expressed his disapproval of the recent speech given by Jonathan Glazer, the director of The Zone of Interest, during the Oscars ceremony.

Glazer’s speech has generated both support and criticism, as he mentioned that he and his producer James Wilson reject their Jewish heritage and the Holocaust being exploited by a political agenda that has caused conflicts for many innocent individuals, such as the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing situation in Gaza.

Nemes, who received the foreign language award in 2015 for his Holocaust film Son of Saul, expressed his thoughts in an article for The Guardian:

“The movie The Zone of Interest carries significant weight… Its director should have chosen not to speak, as it appears he lacks an understanding of history and the destructive forces that threaten humanity, both before and after the Holocaust.

“If he had acknowledged the responsibilities associated with a film of this nature, he would not have relied on rhetoric spread by propaganda that ultimately aims to erase any Jewish influence from the world.

“This is especially concerning at a time when we are witnessing levels of anti-Jewish sentiment reminiscent of the pre-Holocaust era – albeit in a modern, ‘progressive’ guise. Today, the only form of discrimination not just accepted but endorsed is antisemitism.”

Both Son of Saul and The Zone of Interest made their debuts at Cannes Film Festival, eight years apart, where they both received the grand prix award and are both situated at Auschwitz in 1944.

Danny Cohen, the executive producer of the film, stated on Friday that he ‘fundamentally disagreed’ with Glazer’s statements.
