Lawmakers Push for Use of Powerful Spy Tool on Immigrant Families

Breaking News: Americans may soon face an increased risk of being surveilled by their government

Many Americans with family overseas who wish to visit the United States may soon be subject to intensified vetting procedures at the US border. This could mean increased scrutiny for immigrants and foreign visitors, similar to that imposed on suspected terrorists and spies. The Senate Intelligence Committee and its House counterpart are both working on legislation to expand the use of Section 702— a key foreign intelligence program—for screening and vetting visitors to the US.

An upcoming House bill also aims to target asylum seekers, as well as those applying for nonimmigrant visas and green cards. This new legislation seeks to include enhanced vetting procedures, as announced by US Representative Mike Turner, in an interview with CBS on Sunday. The bill looks to expand the 702 program, allowing the US government to wiretap the communications of foreigners presumed to be overseas, without the need for a warrant. The information collected is then stored in a searchable database accessible to four US intelligence agencies.

In a recent declassified report, it was revealed that Section 702 has been used to intercept highly personal and sensitive communications of Americans. These findings have sparked concerns about the chilling effect such surveillance might have on speech.

Despite growing mistrust from lawmakers and the public, lawmakers in the House and Senate are urgently working to find a solution to extend the 702 program, which is set to expire on January 1, 2024.
