We are saddened to hear about the passing of Joey Meyer, former head basketball coach at DePaul University. His legendary career spanned over 30 years, during which he made a tremendous impact on the university and the basketball community.
Meyer’s legacy is deeply rooted in DePaul University. He not only played for the team under his father, Ray Meyer, but also took on the role of head coach in 1984, where he led the Blue Demons to numerous victories and achievements.
Throughout his tenure, Meyer’s leadership brought the team to seven NCAA tournament appearances in his first eight seasons, including back-to-back Sweet 16 berths. His accolades include winning the Chevrolet National Coach of the Year award in 1987 and securing the Great Midwest Conference regular-season championship in 1992.
His contributions to DePaul University and the sport of basketball have earned him a well-deserved place in various halls of fame, including the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame, the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame.
