Telemedicine has become a means for patients to overcome numerous barriers to healthcare access. However, challenges still exist, including technology, insurance coverage, comfort level, and regulatory compliance.
In this captivating video interview, Brandon Welch, MS, PhD, founder and CEO of doxy.me, explains the crucial role of telemedicine in the post-pandemic world. He also provides valuable advice for providers who are considering incorporating telemedicine into their practice and offers five essential tips for success.
The following is a transcript of his remarks:
Telemedicine is a powerful tool to help address a lot of the accessibility issues in healthcare.
Accessibility barriers are found in numerous areas, such as distance and individuals living in rural parts of the country. Eighty-six percent of the U.S. is considered rural. How do those people get access to care?
Access to specialists is another challenge. There are only 3,000 genetic counselors in the country yet people live all over the place. How do people access that type of care? It’s through telemedicine.
Telemedicine can also facilitate access for people who do not speak English, the elderly, disabled individuals, and opportunities for improving racial disparities, women’s health, and stigma related to certain conditions.
These are all barriers to healthcare access that telemedicine can help overcome. Patients can connect to a doctor and receive care without leaving their home or facing the challenges of visiting a healthcare facility.
